ORNITHOLOGICAL PASSION IN THE BAY OF SOMME
Located in  France  on  the  coast of Picardy in the Hauts De France region, The Baiy Of Somme  is   a  radiant  and   welcoming  territory  which  enchants  with  its beauty and
diversity  of  its  natural  landscapes  complemented  by  wild  spaces  that  ornithology enthusiasts never tire of discovering.
Labeled “Grand site de France” on June 15,2011 and covering an area of 70 square kilometers at the same time as being the tenth certified  site  among  the  largest  wetlands  in  France  and  registered in  the European Natura 2000 network,
the Bay Of Somme  located  between  the  tip  of  Hourdel  to the south and the tip of Saint Quentin En Tourmont to the
north east is made up of 2  environments  which  are  the  slikke which is an area of mudflats covered by the sea twice a
day in   complement of  the  schorre  or “mollières” which is  a very specific space covered only during the high tides and
the whole being embellished with 2 estuaries including that of the Somme to the south in parallel with that of the Maye
small  coastal  river  located  further  north  and  these  radiant  places  are  recognized  worldwide   for  their  ecological
specificities which make it  a  rich  and  diverse  ornithological  space  thanks to  their  welcoming natural  environments
adapted to sedentary and migratory birds. Featuring majestic landscapes where colors emerge at daybreak magical and
magical that accompany the fauna and flora, the Bay Of Somme  has  multiple  spaces where  we  meets  more than 310
species of birds which, such as  Jacques  and  Françoise  PATUREL  Parisians  and  photography enthusiasts for 20 years,
have sparked a vocation and passion  for  ornithology. »It  is  an  always  renewed pleasure to stay in this place to watch
with patience,  in  order  to  immortalize  them,  species  such  as  the  Short-eared Owl,  the coot, the white stork or the  avocet that  we  like  to  photograph  especially  during  their  flights and  which it is  also  interesting  to admire in  their
sometimes ceremonious gestures including  reflections  which  blend  into  water in a  burst of  multiples  colors" tell me
Jacques  and  Françoise  PATUREL  while  watching their  last  photos  taken  at  Hable  d'Ault  before joining the Grands
Laviers  ornithological   reserve   extended  over   40  hectares  and  including   a 4  kilometers  tours  equipped  with  13
observatories. » One  of  the  particularities  of  the  Bay  is  the  quality  and  ease  to  access  offered  by its marked and
designed  tours  for  hiking   enthusiasts   and   ornothology   on   well   suited   for   local   leisure   activities  integrating
observation    posts   and   spaces    for  breaks   between 2   getaways   in  a   good   balance  with   environmental  data enhanced by meetings with locals, members of the Bird  Protection  League  and  nature  advisers  supplemented by the
discovery of ecological and ornithological data  from  the  Bay  of  Somme. tell  me  Didier  has  been a nature guide for 5
years and is a great adviser of local wildlife as well.

The Development and Preservation of Wild Life

Traveling through the Baie De Somme is an unforgettable getaway because you  discover numerous natural spaces very often preceded by morning mists which cover, like a cloud, its marshes, its dunes, its  forests  and its estuaries which are

reminiscent of an impressionist painting with a particularity that it is pleasant to contemplate in these places expressing all the diversity of our territories integrating the good practices of ecotourism respectful of the  environment in  parallel

with the fact that the Bay benefits from a climate conducive  to  development  and the  preservation of  wild life.Another

very popular place and much appreciated by fans of nature and wide open spaces, the Marquenterre Park which extends over 200  hectares  has  been  an  essential  place  for  ornithology   for  more  than  4  years  in  Europe  as  François  and Sébastien, Members of the LPO (League for the  Protection of Birds) of the  Somme  Department."The  migration periods

span from February to November,we can observe  during  these  periods more  than 300 species such as waders, waders,

water birds or other passerines and birds of prey along 3 routes which  have 12 observations  posts which  it is delightful

to  see  photographing  as  well  as   observing   using  a  good   pair  of  binoculars or  an  ornithological  telescope  while

deciphering  the  wild  life  of  these  birds  which  make  Marquenterre  Park  a  privileged  stopover between West africa

and Scandinavia ».In total  harmony with  its  geological  configuration in  an  environment  often incorporating surprises

at  every  step  that  are  also  interesting  to  discover  on foot  or  during  mountains   bikes  getaways  along  the  gentle

undulating banks that border its marshes or along its estuaries, the Baie De Somme is also a space  where culture reigns

supreme, particularly during the Bird Festival and  nature, the 33rd  edition  of  which will  take  place from April 20 to 28,

2024 and which brings together both  passionate  about  photography, nature  and  ornithology  but also many lovers of

outdoor adventures beaten paths in this region which  has the  particularity of  maintaining a preserved environment far

from  any  excessive  human  presence  which  it  is   always  fascinating  to  discover  and  which is  the expression of the

environmental wealth of our country and the men and women who sustain it.
