OUTINGS ALONG THE CANAL DU MIDI
Discovering  a   territory  or  region  by  going  off   the  beaten  track  is  an  experience
enriching and what could be  more  attractive  than  setting off to explore the Canal du
Midi  which  will  be   an  opportunity   for  you  to  discover  its  radiant  natural  spaces embellished with a unique heritage that bears witness to our history, completed by the meanders of its course and its gently undulating banks.
Owned by the  state  and  listed  as  a  UNESCO  World Heritage  Site since 1996, the Canal du Midi, initiated and built by Pierre Paul  Riquet  during  the  reign  of  Louis  XIV, is  a  key  part  of  the  French  navigable network, integrating  a very
particular configuration since it leaves from Toulouse to go to Marseillan at the  Pointe des  Onglous  where it  flows into the Thau lagoon parallel to the lateral canal annexed to the Garonne which links Bordeaux and Toulouse forming what is called the Canal des Deux Mers  thus  linking  the 2  large  French  maritime  areas  that  are the  Atlantic  Ocean and  the
Mediterranean Sea. With a course harmoniously configured sometimes in a loop like a  snake  that curls up how pleasant
it is to follow its entire length, the Canal Du Midi located in the Occitanie  region  and  covering  4 departments which are
Hérault, Aude, Haute Garonne and Tarn and which extends over a length of 360  kilometers  completed by feed channels
in parallel with its 328 structures which represent, in addition to their  functionalities  completed  with  locks, a technical achievement well integrated into its environment is a shimmering place often  including  surprises at  every step that are
pleasant  to  discover  whether  on  foot  or  during  outings  by  mountain  bike or  in  high season  and this over a period
extending from the  end  of  March  to  the  end  of  October  on  a  barge  or a  river  boat without a license which allows,
whether as a couple, with family or with  friends  for  a  weekend  package or over several days,to be as close as possible
to the water while taking a 360 degrees look  at its  radiant  landscapes  adjoining that we also call "Slow Tourism" which
is a way of traveling through a territory in slow  motion  by  taking all  the  while the  whole  being  completed with bases
and stops adapted for navigation which one encounters all along of the  canal  that we  never  tire of visiting as there are
so many things to discover in this space where history, culture and environmental protection are constantly combined.

Places Preserved in Their Original States

Endowed with radiant landscapes where magical and enchanting colors emerge at sunrise, the Canal du Midi also has in its  environment  a  magnificently   preserved   architectural  heritage  ,  witness  to  our  history  that  we  observe  while

crisscrossing its course while visiting harmoniously  flowered  villages  completed  with  of  alleys decorated with typical

shops as during stopovers while  visiting  must-see sites  particularly  those  labeled  Grands  Sites  d'Occitanie, including

those of Sète,Canal Du Midi-Béziers,Agde Pézenas, Carcassonne, the Citadels of Vertige or even Narbonne Méditerranée

as well as the locks like those you come across at Fonséranes in Béziers or at Castelnaudary in addition  to the dwellings

corresponding annexes sometimes converted into  living  spaces  and  open-air  cafés  supplemented  by  cultural events

and  artistic  such  as  painting  and  photography  exhibitions  or  even  the  presentation  and  tasting of local craftsmen

products made with tradition and know-how by local producers in  parallel  summer  promotional  operations as was the

case in past years with the “Canal Du Midi Echappée Belle En Occitanie" based on  7  exhibitions  in  stations with varied

themes which presented territories, landscapes and biodiversity up to human, technical and historical data  of the Canal

Du Midi .Another particularity that is pleasant to contemplate along the canal is the  richness  and  diversity  of its fauna

and its flora, home to 280 animal species and at least 60 plant species that can be found on  its  foothills, where  you can admire European rollers,  orioles  and  grey  herons.  Whether  on  foot, by  bike  or  on  board a  barge  sized  to  suit the specificities of the canal, crisscrossing the Canal du Midi is a pure marvel that allows you to discover places preserved in their original state or where shaded areas where it is  good  to  stop, places  of  life, culture  and  relaxation  designed for conviviality  and  breaks  between  2  dockings,  completed  by  unique  places  expressing  all  the  beauty of this radiant territory that is the Canal Du Midi.
