THE FASCINATING HISTORY OF THE FRIGATE HERMIONE

Our maritime heritage also linked to the fascinating history of the French

explorers on all continents is also the living memory of our conquering spirit

like the Frigate HERMIONE maritime jewel and symbol of the influence of the

France and its ideal of freedoms.

Originally built in 1778 at the Rochefort Naval Dockyard, the Frigate HERMIONE French warship composed of 28 guns

in service from 1779 to 1793 is a Frigate also known to have driven in 1780 from Boston to the United States Gilbert Du

Motier Marquis De La fayette French officer and politician as part of his commitment to 1777 to 1783 in the ranks of the

American insurgent army supplemented by its decisive role, at the time, in the war of independence of the United

States against Great Britain especially on October 19, 1781 in the battle of Yorktown in Virginia, a state located on the

American east coast. Symbol of France and its ideal of freedoms in parallel with its conquering spirit complemented

by its strength of commitment, the construction site of an initial replica of the Frigate HERMIONE began on September

4, 1997 in Rochefort and spanned a period of 17 years with an update water on September 7,2014.Magnificent replica

of an 18th century three-mast integrating a length of 44.20 meters for a height of 47 meters including 17 linen sails for

a total weight of 1200 tonnes including 63 tonnes of guns, the Frigate HERMIONE is composed, when it is in period of,

navigation, of 18 professional sailors distributed between 6 officers who go from the commander to the second captain

supplemented by 2 navigation officers and gunners in parallel with a steward and a chief mechanic,the remainning

balance of the management being made up of 3 masters including 1 boatswain, 2 cooks and 1 steward and 6 sailors divi-

ded with 3 heads of third parties and three assistants the whole being completed by a team of 54 volunteers who are

the gabiers as was already practiced in the 18th century.

The 2015 Inauguration Trip To The United States

For its maiden trip effective from the year 2015 , the

Frigate HERMIONE embarked on a crossing of the Atlantic

to join the United States in the footsteps of Marquis Of

La Fayette including stopovers chosen for their historical

positions in the history of the American Revolution cou-

pled with the help and support of France.Leaving on April

18, 2015 and after a stopover in the island from Aix near

Rochefort, THE HERMIONE first landed at Yorktown to

then join the American ports of Mout Vernon, Alexandria,

Annapolis, Baltimore , New York, Philadelphia, Green Port,

Newport , Boston , Castine tracked then stopovers in

Halifax in Canada then in Saint Pierre Et Miquelon, Brest,

Bordeaux then the Rochefort port on August 29, 2015.

Created in December 1992 and based in Rochefort in the Charente Maritime department, chaired by Marc De Briançon

and made up of an operational team led by Emilie Beau including 20 permanent employees, 320 volunteers for 2.500

members in France and abroad, the association HERMIONE La Fayette manage various operations,projects and trips

of this jewel of our maritime heritage, as was the case for the tours in Brittany in 2016 with participation in Brest

maritime festivals as for the Mediterranean in 2018 in the context,in particular,of a parallel trip intented to promote the

Frenchspeaking development completed the following year in Normandy including its presence in the armada of Rouen

in June 2019. Also certified as a training organization, the association provides recognized training ranging from civic

engagement to crew or maritime spirit right up to the modules on how to be,how to do and how to act,more specifica-

lly for the young people. Visits from The HERMIONE are also organized whether in free or guided tours that allow you

to discover its history related to Marquis de La fayette in addition to its reconstruction from 1997 to 2014 embellished

with its recent travels.Since fall 2021,The HERMIONE is immobilized at the port of BAYONNE as part of a large fairing

and this great operation that mobilize around thirty companies supplemented by a community of 30 to 40 people

including in particular volunteers, various service providers,employees and young people in the context of training and

which also benefits from the technical support and expertise of construction and maintenance professionals of wooden

ships must be spread out until the end of 2023 for a forecast of the refloating of the Frigate in 2025. In our society in

perpetual motion,it is reassuring to note that the spirit of conquest,the strength of commitment and generosity are also

embellished with audacious projects for the preservation of our heritage which are only acts crossed with a few touches

of color in the big fresco of our globalized world but which have the merit of convincing us of their desire for progress.

Claire, before coming to your internship in Australia, can you, in a few words, introduce yourself to our readers?

My name is Claire, I'm 21 years old and before leaving for Australia-I feel like I'm talking about another life-I was in second year

ideas. I therefore regularly consulted the BIEP, the interministerial public employment bank, which posts internship offers

of the MEAE. When I saw that the French Embassy in Australia offered an internship at the Chancellery to follow up on

climate and environment issues which are subjects that interest me, I jumped at the opportunity and I did not hesitate long

before sending my application. I had never thought of as my next travel destination but the offer seemed

A few weeks later, I got an interview and the next day, I was selected to go to Australia! I am

I was chosen not to shout in full course on the European women's lobbies ... So here I am in Canberra for an internship

6 months at the French Embassy and for now, the dream keeps its promises.
