THE TRADITIONS OF THE LORRAINE MIRABELLE
When you visit a region and  take  a  close interest in its culture and history, it is also interesting to meet local producers of good local products such as in Lorraine in the
Grand Est  region  with the  production of mirabelles and who are happy to help you discover  this  delicious  fruit  with  its  different  culinary adaptations inherited from
ancestral  traditions  as  I  have  observed  in  the  territories  of  the departments of
Moselle and Meurthe et Moselle.
Located in the heart of  the  Grand  Est  region, the  departments  of Moselle and Meurthe Moselle are radiant territories
which enchant with the beauty of their natural spaces embellished with a rich and diverse heritage often complemented by   ancestral   traditions   which  are   also   found   in   the   agricultural   domain  ,  particularly   in   the   production   of
mirabelles which  is  a  small  round  yellow  plum  and this delicious  fruit  produced  and  exploited  in  Lorraine has also
a gripping story since its origin dates back to the Middle Ages when  it was  used  as a royal  gift as was  the case in 1569 when  the  inhabitants  gave  King  Charles  IX  and  his  mother  Catherine   De  Medicis   some  mirabelles  preserved  in
sugar during their visits to Metz. The geological and  environmental  specificity  of  the  Lorraine  soil  is very suitable for
growing mirabelle plums because it is rich in clay and minerals allowing the Mirabelle  plum tree,a fruit-bearing tree with
shallow roots, to draw from the  soil the  resources  available  to  it  necessary to  enable  Lorraine to produce 90% of the
world's  consumption  of  mirabelles  for  an  annual  production  of  15,000  tonnes."The  Mirabelle , a  true  gastronomic ambassador of  Lorraine ,  has  the  particularity  of  having  been  certified in  1995  as  the  first fruit  with the protected geographical   indication (PGI)  which  guarantees  its   origin  and   its   specificity  , guaranteeing   consumers  optimum production quality in parallel with the  certified  sector " Mirabelles  De  Lorraine" which  today has  250  producers for a substantial annual production consumed for 25% in fresh fruit, the balance divided at 65% for frozen halves, jams, coulis
and pure fruit purees, the remaining 10% being  marketed  as  eaux-de-vie  and  mirabelle  plum liqueurs which we enjoy
enjoy as a digestif after a good dinner accompanied by a succulent  Mirabelle  plum tart  for  dessert, whether they come from Metz, which have the specificity of being smaller and with thin skin with a color varying from an orange-yellow tone in the sun and sometimes greenish-yellow in the shade, incorporating the presence of bloom,or those from Nancy which differ  by  their  larger  sizes, including  tones  varying   from   orange-yellow  to  slightly  orange-red , also  incorporating numerous dots with a brownish point in  the  center  of the  fruit, Lorraine  mainly  having 2  varieties of Mirabelle plums bearing the names of the cities concerned. Tell me Daniel PINTON, who manages a farm in the orchards of Saintois.

Delicious Mirabelles Plums in Pastel Yellow Colors

Running from mid-August to the end of September each year, the Lorraine Mirabelle plum season, classified as PGI, lasts for a period of 6 weeks with variations including earlier or later varieties for a harvest at maturity during this summer period, in parallel with the environmental data which make from the production of mirabelles exploited mainly in

orchards a reference in terms of agriculture balanced integrating a quality approach including the health safety of

products and their production process transformations and consumption in parallel with the non-use of synthetic chemical substances."Despite the years and even if our storage equipment and means of transport are now more mechanized and more modern , the principle of picking is still the same and has been for several centuries, namely "nocking the fruits" in other words shaking the plum trees in order to make the ripe fruits fall into a large woven cloth to then store them, sell them and process them." Isabelle CARRE tell me with a smile while designating a mirabelle plum

tree overflowing with sumptuous and delicious pastel yellow mirabelle plums. "Once picked and when it is cut in 2, its stone comes off by itself and its freckles in parallel with the thin protective layer which covers it which is the pruina are the marks of its picking at the right time with a following common consumption in fresh fruit, dried, transformed into

jam,or even in compote, water of life or fruits in syrup while specifying that the mirabelle plum of Lorraine acclimatizes very well to freezing but must be cooked and treated beforehand in order not to blacken" Julien CAMBERRET, farmer and also fine gourmet, knowing all the facets and the good recipes of this gastronomic treasure of Lorraine which is also worthily celebrated during  The Mirabelle Plum Festival which takes place every year in August in METZ  and which bring

together in a friendly and festive atmosphere residents, producers, distillers but also jam makers, confectioners, catering and hotel professionals and who represent the very lively diversity of this radiant territory that is Lorraine where history,

culture and the art of living are constantly combined with ancestral traditions that are always exciting to discover and

which are the living expression of its cultural, historical and gastronomic wealth.
